AcondensedversionofRosefeldt'sfilmicinterpretationofJosephHaydn'sTheCreationandconceivedfortheRuhrtriennale2015,IntheLandofDrought(2015/2017)confrontstherelationshipbetweenmanandhisimpactontheworld.Settoatmosphericsoundsandapulsatinghum,the43-minutepiecelooksbackfromanimaginedfutureuponthepost-Anthropocene:theaftermathofsignificanthumaninfluenceonEarth.Anarmyofscientistsappeartoinvestigatearcheologicallyattheremnantsofcivilisationafterhumanityhasmadeitselfextinct.Shotentirelyusingadrone,Rosefeldt'simageshovermeditativelyoverthedesolatelandscapeandruins.Connotingsurveillance,thedrone'sbird'seyeviewremoveshumanperspectivewithusonlookerskeptatadistancethroughout. Increasingly,morefiguresdressedinwhitelabsuitsemergetoinspecttheruinsofcivilisation–whichareinfactabandonedfilmsetsclosetotheMoroccanAtlasMountains.Theoverall-cladbodiesappearinstarkcontrasttothedulllandscape,likealienvisitorswhowereperhapsoncefamiliarwiththisruinedwasteland. Halfwaythrough,theaudienceistransportedtothecomparablybleakRuhrareaofGermanywheretheremainsofindustrialisationlie.Thesame'scientists'prowltheabandonedminingregion,amidsttheheadframesandcoal-pits,wanderingacrosslonelylandbeforefinallydescendinguponanamphitheatre.Asseenfromtheaudience'sheavenlyoutlook,theamphitheatreresemblesaneye,anditsall-seeingabilityisreflectiveofthepanopticaerialviewpoint.Thus,adialogueunfoldsbetweenthetwoperspectivesofcontrol:theeyeonthegroundandthedrone'seyeoverhead.Asthesteadyhumlivenstoaclimaticrhythm,thefiguresdrawcloseonlytodisperseagain.Reminiscentofcelldivision,theunifyingaestheticshintataprospectiveoptimismamidstadislocatedworldmanhascreated.
