ThefirstofSchroeter’sseriesofdocumentariesabouttheatricalperformers,DressRehearsalbeganasacommissionbyGermantelevisionforashortreportonthe1980editionoftheWorldTheatreFestivalinNancy,France.Inspiredbyanumberoftheperformersatthefestival,Schroetercreatedinsteadafeature-lengthfilmessay.Inparticular,hefocusesonPinaBauschandhertroupefromtheWuppertalTanztheater,theJapanesebutohdancerKazuoOhnoandtheAmericanperformanceartistPatOlesko.Outofanengrossingandentertainingcollageofvariousimpressionsfromthefestival,includingrehearsals,performances,interviews,readingsandencountersonstageandoff,Schroeterdevelopsameditationontherelationshipbetweenartandpoliticsandpresentsanearlyformulationofhisideasaboutperformanceasaformoflove.
