
LiveHere-ÂsNutayuneânisthestoryoftherevitalizationoftheWampanoaglanguage,thefirsttimealanguagewithnonativespeakershasbeenrevivedinthiscountry.TheWampanoag’sancestorsensuredthesurvivalofthePilgrimsinNewEngland,andlivedtoregretit.Nevertheless,throughresilienceandcouragetheykepttheiridentityaliveandremainedontheirancestrallands.Nowaculturalrevivalistakingplace.<br/> Thestorybeginsin1994whenJessieLittleDoe,anintrepid,30-somethingWampanoagsocialworker,beganhavingrecurringdreams:familiar-lookingpeoplefromanothertimeaddressingherinanincomprehensiblelanguage.Jessiewasperplexedandalittleannoyed—whycouldn’ttheyspeakEnglish?Later,sherealizedtheywerespeakingWampanoag,alanguagenoonehadusedformorethanacentury.<br/> TheseeventssentherandmembersoftheAquinnahandMashpeeWampanoagcommunitiesonanodysseythatwoulduncoverhundredsofdocumentswrittenintheirancestrallanguage,leadJessietoaearnherselfamastersdegreeinlinguisticsatMIT,andresultinsomethingthathadneverbeendonebefore–bringingalanguagealiveagaininanAmericanIndiancommunityaftermanygenerationswithnonativespeakers.Withcommitment,studygroups,classes,andcommunitywideeffort,manyareapproachingfluency.Jessie’syoungdaughterMaeisthefirstnativespeakerinmorethanahundredyears.
