
Inthe1960sand1970s,peoplewhocouldn’tfindhopeinSouthKorealeftfortheUnitedStatesinthehopeoffindingtheAmericanDream.Inacountrywheretheydidn’tspeakthelanguage,peopleopenedliquorshopsandformedtheirowncommunitywithintegrityandresponsibilitydespitedifficultconditionsincludingracismandarmedrobberies.Andthe“liquorstorebabies”whowerebornandraisedthere,likethedirectorofthisfilm,haveadifferentAmericandreamoftheirown—oneimbuedwithambivalencetowardtheirparents’generationandtheKoreanAmericancommunityinLA.Whilevariousincidents,suchastheLAriotsinthe1990s,theBlackLivesMattermovementin2020,thecollapseofthelocalcommunityduetotheCovidpandemicandnewhope,aswellasgenerationalgapabouttheKoreanidentity,bringlaughterandtears,theaudiencecannaturallydiscoverthecurrentstateofKoreansociety.
