詹姆斯·格里森出生于纽约市，父母威廉·格里森与米娜·克罗柳斯均为戏剧从业者。他与露西尔·格里森（本名露西尔·韦伯斯特）结为连理，育有一子拉塞尔·格里森。青年时期，詹姆斯曾参加美西战争。战后他加入父母在加州奥克兰自由剧院经营的固定剧团，随后与妻子迁居俄勒冈州波特兰市，在贝克剧院参与固定剧目演出。此后数年他们辗转各地巡演，直至第一次世界大战期间詹姆斯应征入伍。退役后，他在舞台剧《五百万》中亮相，继而转向创作领域，包括为纽约舞台制作《真是这样吗？》。他还自编自演了《替罪羊》与《百老汇的香农一家》。 1929年，他为米高梅公司创作了《百老汇旋律》。1930年相继参与《狂妄之徒》《貂皮蠢货》《好个寡妇！》《风雨无阻》及《首次指挥》等作品的合作编剧。此后他与妻子同与帕特公司签约，露西尔担任演员，詹姆斯（昵称吉米）则担任编剧。其最为人熟知的银幕形象当属奇幻佳作《佐丹先生出马》（1941）中的马克斯·科克尔——这位拳击经理人因命运错位而经历生死奇遇。
