My friend Percy's magic sneakers

Ulf is nine and would rather drive a box car and sneak up on bathing aunts than go to school. But then a new guy comes to class: Percy. Percy is all that Ulf would like to be; smart and tough. The secret is a pair of ugly and worn sneakers that apparently possess a magical power. Ulf can not let go of the thought of getting over the shoes himself.
