The director of the plant, Pyotr Andreev, dies at the hands of unknown people in a provincial town. Shortly before his death, he refused to sell the plant to St. Petersburg millionaire Yevgeny Gruzdev. Andreev's son Sergei blames the businessman for his father's death and goes in search of the killer in St. Petersburg, where he gets a job as a loader in the shop of a certain Vazhi. The owner introduces Sergei to the thief in law Makeev, who agrees to give Andreev money for business development. Sergei opens the company "Provincial" and begins to build a chain of stores. Gruzdev, meanwhile, has made no attempt to seize the Dolinin plant.
