The Hausman couple is happy with their new house in the countryside. Mr. Hausman, in particular, is pleased with the vacant plot of land next door. But then a strange character arrives, carrying a garden gnome and a measuring tape, and sets up camp on the lawn. To Mr. Hausman's dismay, the curious man turns out to be their new neighbor, who promptly unpacks the plans for his future house and invites them both for a viewing. In stark contrast to her husband, Mrs. Hausman makes no secret of her fondness for Mr. Keefer, an early retiree from the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). A complicated neighborly relationship begins.
