Columnist Bas Heijne wonders why people in today's 'post truth' world are so easily fooled. What makes the nationalist one-liners of conservative leaders so attractive? What feeds the feeling of unease and division? In the four-volume series Onbehagen by Human and VPRO, he investigates why the ideals of our civilisation are coming under increasing pressure. Discussions with thinkers, historians and scientists and the use of special archival material are in the service of Heijne's argument. Some of the speakers: primatologist and biologist Robert Sapolsky, writer David Van Reybrouck, Charlie Hebdo journalist Zineb El Rhazoui, historian Anne Applebaum and anthropologist and jihadist expert Scott Atran.
