Secret of the Midwife

Marthe is a girl with a special gift: she can cure diseases. But she lives in a time shaped by superstition and piety. When Marthe cannot help Burggraves wife from her village, the girl must flee. Her path crosses that of knight Christian, who is travelling eastwards in search of a better life in a foreign country. Christian can hardly hide his fascination for Marthe, but the differences between their cultures makes a relationship impossible and the settlers are afraid of this weird girl. When Christian is forced to follow his leader Otto von Wettin into battle, he must leave Marthe unprotected. And Christian's unscrupulous adversary, Randolf, uses this lack of protection as an opportunity to take revenge on Christian, by exploiting his one weakness: Marthe. Thus, the fight between these rivals begins. When silver is found in Christians village, he and the settlers must decide what price they are willing to pay for power and wealth, and how much freedom and fellowship are worth.
