Between 1400 and 1600, the Bavarian-Swabian family made world history from Augsburg with an indomitable spirit of enterprise. The history of the Fuggers is the history of a symbiosis between the crown and capital. On the one hand the Habsburgs on their way to becoming a world power, on the other hand the bankers from Bavaria as world market pioneers. They govern emperors, kings and popes like chess pieces. As the gray eminences of money, they had an impact on monopolies, cartels, big loans and trade wars. They succumbed to the hubris of being able to buy anything to increase their influence. The history of this Augsburg family is at the same time a panorama of those seething centuries with which modern times began. (Lyrics: BR)
