Three lifelong friends, Akira, Ken & Bunta, accept their senior Jiro's invitation to come to Canada to start a rice curry shop together. However, at the last minute, Bunta is forced to cancel his trip due to family issues. Ken and Akira travel to Canada on their own to find Jiro, but unbeknownst to them, the wife of the owner of the sushi restaurant Jiro works for has eloped with him and run off. This leaves Ken and Akira thrown out into Canada, unable to speak English, and lacking familiarity with the country and culture. While meeting many different people and sometimes being overwhelmed by reality, and being at the mercy of various events, Ken and Akira struggle to achieve their dreams in an unfamiliar country. Taped extensively on location in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec, Rice Curry is a poignant portrait of the excesses of bubble-era Japan, and a truly unique tale of mutual culture shock.
