The teacher couple Renate and Rolf Fischer want to fly to California to go on vacation and visit many things such as museums. Already on the plane they meet Sissy and Harry, who came up with the idea of flying to the USA more by accident and are a bit disorganized. They have no hotel, no rental car and no idea how to proceed after their arrival in the USA after they have received neither a rental car nor accommodation. First they spend the night with Renate and Rolf (who had planned the trip perfectly) in the room, but soon they meet Willy and Andy, who have immigrated from Germany. Through Willy they come to Lake Tahoe, where Renate and Rolf follow. There, Harry and Sissy decide to spend the rest of the journey together with Renate and Rolf, which will cause some relationship problems.
