Jellyfishemploysavarietyofexperimentalapproaches,combiningstop-motionandpixilationtechniques,freelymixingblackandwhitephotographyofbeachlandscapes,objectsandpeople-alongwithsomedrawings-tobuildapoetic,verytexturedmontage,elidingtherealandthesurreal,thebeautifulandtheeerie,thespiritedandthedeadly.Figuresandobjectsareisolated,linkedtogetheronlybytheirpresenceonabeach,allexposedtodirectorindirectthreats.Thedifferentjellyfishareasmuchatthreat-washingupdead,strandedinthedesolatelandscape-astheyareathreat-appearingsuddenlyandmakingpeoplevanish. Jellyfishresonateswithasenseofunseenmenaceprevalentinthe1970s,attheheightoftheColdWar.Withitsmushroomcloudshape(providingthefilm'smostdirectimage),stingingtentaclesandalienappearance,thejellyfishmakesapotentsymbolfortheatomicbomb.Thefilmmakesatfirstimplicit,andlaterexplicit,referencestonuclearthreat:theemblematicjellyfish,awomandisappearinginatoxiccloud,anonymoussuitedpoliticiansaroundatable,arecurringimageofamanrunning(interror?).Themoodofurgencyandanxietyisenhancedbythesoundtrackandediting,whichgrowfasterandmorestaccatoasthefilmgoeson. In1973,atthetimeofthefilm'smaking,theVietnamWarwasstillinprogress,whilethefullextentoftheriskofafull-scalenuclearwarfollowingRussia'sinterventioninthatyear'sEgypt-Israeliwaronlyemergedlater.
