
In1999,shortlybeforetheaccessionofChinatotheWorldTradeOrganization,thePeople’sBankofChinaissuedthefiftheditionofRenminbibanknotes,whicharestillinuse.Forthefirsttime,asingleportraitofMaoZedongisfeaturedoneverydenominationofRenminbibanknotes.Thecolortoneofthelargestdenominationbill(100-Yuan)hasbeenchangedtoabrightpink,instarkcontrasttoitsgreyishpredecessor.Despitethefactthatthe100-Yuanbillisactuallypink,thePeople’sBankofChinaofficiallyclaimeditwas“red”andthebillisjokinglyknownasthe“redgrandpaMao”.Pinkisoftenstereotypedasa“femininecolor”,whilethemaleleader’sportraitissupposedtorepresentastrongmasculinecharacter,hencethejuxtapositionof“Pink”andthe“Leader’sPortrait”onRenminbibanknotesisworthyoffurtherinvestigation.Ontheotherhand,asdigitalpaymentmethodsgraduallyreplacecashpayments,banknotesarebecoming“invisible”.Interwovenwithcontemporaryeverydayimagesandhistoricalmaterials,thisessayfilmcontextualizesanddiscussestherepresentationoftheMao-portraitonthebanknotesandthecrisisitisexperiencinginthedigitalage.
