StereoscopewasproducedbyKentridge’suniqueprocessofanimation.Foreachfilmsequence,theartistbeginswithasinglecharcoaldrawing,whichhemodifieseitherbyadditionsorerasures.Eachalterationtothedrawingisphotographedtobecomeoneframeofhisanimatedfilm.Thefilmisthereforetheresultofthousandsofchangestoafewdrawings.Kentridge’snarrativesaregroundedintherecentpoliticsofhisnativeSouthAfricabutarealsopersonalworks.Thework’sprotagonist,SohoEckstein,apinstripe-suitedbusinessman,isbasedontheartist’sgrandfatherbutresemblestheartistphysically.Thelabor-intensivefilmmakingprocess,visibletotheviewerinthefinishedwork,becomesametaphoricparalleltothedeliberateactsofeffacementandremembrancethatcharacterizeSouthAfrica’spost-apartheidstate.Inthisnewestfilm,Kentridgereferencesthestereoscope,aphotographicdevicethatproducestheillusionofathree-dimensionalimagebycombiningtwopicturesofasinglesubjecttakenfromdifferentpointsofview.
