In1994artistGeorgHeroldinvitedanumberofBritishandGermanartiststoparticipateinaprojectcalledKaraoke(Fußball-WM)(KaraokeFootball–WorldCup)forPortikus,Frankfurt.Insodoinghehopedtocreatean“exchangeofculturaldifferences…withpredefinedrulesofthegame”byintroducingaKaraokeelementthatwould“breakupandexpandthepredefinedandtightlymarked-outfield”ofart.Theexhibition,timedtocoincidewiththe1994WorldCup,followedanearlierexhibitionthathadtransformedPortikusintoabarandvideothequeforthe1990WorldCup.BullochandGillickrejectedthiscuratorialdirectiveandchosetotakea“pre-football,beforeKaraoke”stance.ThisactioninvolveddiggingaholedecoratedwithbuntingandprotectedbyaHerold-likewoodenstructureoutsidethemainentrancetothespace;plantingameadowonthelandsurroundingthebuilding;andproducingavideo-manifestoattheFrankfurtSportverbandHostelwherealltheBritishartistswerehoused.This“counter-context”positionexpressedtheirskepticismaboutreinforcingnationalidentitiesinordertotranscendthemoncemore:astrategyofdétournementconceivedbytheartistsasakindof“Medievalconceptualism.”
