DieSeelederPflanzeisoneoftheearlyshortsproducedbytheUfa-Kulturabteilung(UfaCulturalDepartment),foundedin1918topromotefilmswitheducationalcontent.TheproductionteamcountedseveralpeoplewhoworkedextensivelywiththeKulturabteilung,includingthecinematographerMaxBrinckandthescientificadvisorWilhelmBerndt,azoologistfromtheUniversityofBerlinwhohadorganizedthefirstfilmscreeningsattheUraniaInstitutein1911. PurportingtoofferamodernscientifictakeonancientGreekpantheisticviewsofnature,thefilmdrawsonalongtraditionofliteratureprobingthepotentialintelligenceandsensitivityofplants.ThatintereststretchesatleastasfarbackasJ.J.Grandville’sLesFleursanimées(1847)andGustavFechner’sNannaoderüberdasSeelenlebenderPflanzen(1848).Itwasparticularlyvibrantintheearly20thcenturyduetoawaveofpopularsciencebooksbyauthorssuchRaoulFrancé(e.g.,DieSeelederPflanze,1924).
