4-channelfilminstallation Colour,sound ShotonSuper16mm ConvertedtoPALSDandtransferredontoDVD Aspectratio16:9 Loop,16min36sec(1h6min24secloopintotal) Edition6+2ap Thefour-channelfilminstallationTheShift(2008)recallsRosefeldt’searlyinquiriesintohiddenandforgottenspaces.Onceagaintheprotagonistisalonelywandererwhomovesslowlythroughascience-fictionsetting,agiantnetworkoftunnelsandvariouscontrolroomsfilledwithoutdatedtechnology.Bychanginghisclothesheslipsintofourdifferentroles–ajanitor,asecurityagent,ascientistandachanneldigger–andyethischaracterdoesnotchange.HeremainsaCerberus,takingcareofanengineeredandmachine-runenvironmentwhichlongagostartedworkingautonomously,withouttheneedofhumaninterference.Referencestoscience-fictionclassicssuchasStanleyKubrick’s2001–ASpaceOdysseyandAndreiTarkovsky’sSolarisareevidentbothinimageandsound–as,forinstance,whentheprotagoniststepsoutofastargateintoawhite,icydesert.Eventuallywhatappearedtobeanexitfromthisclosedandclaustrophobiccircuitturnsouttobejustanotherinhospitablelandscape,andametaphorforsolitude.Thefilmloopcontinuesandtheroamingmanappearsagain,dresseddifferently,startingoverhisdailyroutine. TheShiftwasoriginallyproducedasaprologueforthetheatreplayTheCity/TheCut(writtenbyMartinCrimp/MarkRavenhill),directedbyThomasOstermeierattheBerlinerSchaubuehnein2008.Theworkspeaksofthegrowingisolationofhumanbeingsdrivenbytheincreasingimpactoftechnicsandmedia,aswellasoftheiralienationfromnature.Theinstallationdrawsamelancholicpictureofwhatpeopleonceenthusiasticallyhopedwouldbethebetterfuture.
