Whathappenstonatureafteranuclearaccident?Andhowdoeswildlifedealwiththeworlditinheritsafterhumaninhabitantshavefled? In1986anuclearmeltdownattheinfamousChernobylpowerplantinpresent-dayUkraineleftmilesoflandinradioactiveruins.Residentslivinginareasmostcontaminatedbythedisasterwereevacuatedandrelocatedbygovernmentorder,andano-man’slandofourownmakingwaslefttoitsowndevices.Intheensuing25years,forests,marshes,fieldsandriversreclaimedtheland,reversingtheeffectsofhundredsofyearsofhumandevelopment.Andsurprisingly,thisexclusionzone,or“deadzone,”hasbecomeakindofpost-nuclearEden,populatedbybeaverandbison,horsesandbirds,fishandfalcons–andruledbywolves. Accesstothezoneisnowpermitted,atleastonalimitedbasis,andscientistsaremonitoringthesurvivingwildlifeinthearea,tryingtolearnhowthevariousspeciesarecopingwiththeinvisibleblightofradiation.Asthetoppredatorsinthisnewwilderness,wolvesbestreflecttheconditionoftheentireecosystembecauseifthewolvesaredoingwell,thepopulationsoftheirpreymustalsobedoingwell.Accordingly,akeylong-termstudyofthewolveshasbeeninitiatedtodeterminetheirhealth,theirrange,andtheirnumbers.
