AION(AncientGreekαιων=“infinity”,“eternity”,atimespanbeyondhumanunderstanding)isaportraitoffourabandonedspacesinsidetheso-called“ZoneofAlienation”inChernobyl,Ukraine;adrippingswimmingpool,aruinedconcerthall,amould-infestedgymnasiumandanoldvillagechurch.DuringthedaysandweeksfollowingtheaccidentattheChernobylnuclearpowerplantonApril26th,1986,thelocalpopulationwereevacuatedbySovietmilitary,andtheyhadtoleavebehindalltheirbelongings.Theformerhomes,meetingplacesandrecreationcentresweredeclaredcontaminatedterritory–infact,theywillremainuninhabitableforthousandsofyears. Twodecadesafterthedisaster,JacobKirkegaardvisitedtheexclusionareawithhisrecordingequipment.HisapproachwasinspiredbyAlvinLucier'swork“Iamsittinginaroom”[1970].Whilesittinginaroom,Lucierrecordedhisownvoicerecitingatextwhichhethenplayedbackintheroom.Herepeatedthisprocessoverandoveragainuntilthedifferentlayersofhisvoicebegantomergeintoaconstantdrone.Kirkegaarddidn’trecordhisownvoicebutthevoiceoftheroomitself.Heputupamicrophoneandaspeaker,startedtherecordingandleft.Aftertenminutes,hereturned,stoppedtherecordingandplayeditbackintothesamespace.Witheachnewlayer,thesubtlesoundsoftheroomwereenlargedanddeepeneduntiltheyfinallyturnedintoonehummingsoundwithmanyovertones. Forthevisualrepresentationofthefourrooms,Kirkegaardexploredavarietyoftechniques,workingwithlayers,overexposureandvideofeedback,thatcanbeunderstoodasanalogoustohisacousticalmethod.
