Hyperborea,avideoinstallationthatwilldocumentthejourneyattemptingtolocateHyperboreaaccordingtoitsdescriptionsinliterature,newspaperarticlesandmythology.Theinstallationtakestheviewerfromtheprimordial,virginforestofOregon,toSt.Petersburganditserodingpalacesandhauntednaturalhistorymuseum,andfinallytotheruinsoftheGulagprisonsandarcheologicalsitesontheWhiteSea.Presentthroughouttheinstallationisacloudofredsmokethatfunctionsbothasametaphorfortheexaltedselfandanexpressionofthecollectiveunconscious. Thebodyofworkbeganwiththeartist’sobservationthatmythologicalpatternswereundeniablywovenintothefabricofeverydayreality–specificallyinthetensionformedbetweentheactualandthepotential–andwasexpandedbytheconceptofHyperborea,amythicalregionthathasbeenrecentlyclaimedtobediscoveredontheWhiteSeainnorthernRussia.HyperboreawasoriginallydescribedbytheancientGreekwriterHerodotusasthelandoftheGoldenAge,andwasthoughttobeaplaceofpurebliss,perpetualsunlightandeternalspringtime.IthasbeenaninspirationforearlymodernistthinkerssuchasNietzscheandMadameBlavatskaya,whileactingasacentralthemetotheearlytwentiethcenturySt.PetersburgpoetictraditionofAcmeism—dealingwiththe“goldenageofman.”Hyperboreacontinuestoexciteimaginationofglobalmediaasthesupposedbirth-placeofnumerousculturesandnations.
