TensionBuildingisacompositeoflinkedarchitecturalspaces,somearerealandsomearemodels.Itcombinesstop-motionandlive-actionfilmmakingshotattheHarvardUniversityColiseuminBoston(1935)andtheMunicipalStadiuminFlorence(1932),builtinbyLuigiNervi. Iamfascinatedbystadiumarchitecturebecauseitisdesignedtoprovidetwooppositeviewingexperiences,thevisceraldirectexperienceofwatchingphysicalactionandthepassiveexperiencemediatedthroughfiltersofdistanceanddelay. Themotiveforthisfilmcamefromthequestion:HowcanImakeastadiumaninteractiveplatformforagame? Thestadiumarchitectureisaclosedsystem,withequalunitsofmeasureinalldirectionsanditsperfectsymmetry.Usingmycameraasatransit,Isurveyedthestadiumseatingandcreatedsomesimplerulesforthepathofmycameraanditsaim.Theresultisamotionmachine;astadiumthatmovesalongthelinesofitsdesign,respondingtothe“highs”and“lows”ofthegame,throughthedifferentstagesofwarmup,commandantaction,torewardandcelebration.—E.B.
