WithTORQUEBjörnKämmerercontinueshisrecentcinematicinvestigationsintotheintersectionofabstractionandrepresentation,geometryandmotion.InhisprevioustwofilmsGYREandTURRET,heremovednormallystaticdomesticobjectsfromtheireverydaycontextandsettheminmotion.Therevolvingitems–alargemodelofalogcabininGYREandanarrangementofwindowcasementsinTURRET–werefilmedinastudio,theirrevolutionsservingtorevealuniquegraphicqualities.ForTORQUE,Kämmererhasleftdomesticarchitecturebehind,takingthecameraoutofdoorstoshootonlocation.Thefilmconsistsofasinglecontinuoustrackingshotacrossaseriesofconvergingrailwaytracks.Thecinemascopeimageissubtlymodulatedbythegradualupwardtiltofthecameraslowlyrevealingafurtherextensionoftrack.Thisdoublemotionalongtwodifferenttrajectoriesoriginatingfromtwoseparateaxiscreatesavisualandperceptualtensionbetweenourexperienceofrenaissanceperspective,theexpandingdepthoffield,andthetwodimensionalplaneofthesurfaceonwhichtheimageisprojected,wherethetrackscanalsobereadasabstractshiftingdiagonallines. TORQUEpushesandpullstheviewerindifferentdirectionsasitillustratestheuncannycoexistencebetweentheperpetualsidewaysmotiononthescreenandthearrangementofconvergingtracks.Adynamictensionexistsbetweenthegeometricelements,thesmoothdiagonallinesofthetracks,andthoseelements,gravelandwoodentiesthatpossessaroughirregularityindicatingtheactuallocationofthefilm.Theunmodulatedparallellinesoftheblankmonorialopticalsoundtrackprovideanalmostinaudibleechooftherailwaytracksonscreenwhich,onametaphysicallevelsuggestaseeminglyendlessproliferationofpast,presentandfuturejourneybeginningattheunnamedlocationfromwhichtheyradiate.Inthiswaythefilmservesasacentralaxisfortravelintimeaswellasspace.
