Hiswasanautocraticone-partystateinwhichanydissentwasruthlesslysuppressed.FollowingthedeathofHafezin2000,fatherwassucceededbyson-Basharal-Assadtookthereignsandadynastywasborn. In2011,withtheregioninrevolt,theal-Assadregimewaschallenged. Thistwo-partdocumentaryonthehistoryofmodernSyriaprovidesdeepercontexttotheongoingwarinthecountry.ThefilmchartstheriseoftheBaathpartyandtheemergenceoftheAssadpoliticaldynasty.
