InLaNave,Colombianartistandfirst-timefilmmakerCarlosMariaRomero(akaAtabeyMamasita)translatesthemeaningandspiritofCarnivaldeBarranquilladuringayearinwhichgatheringswereforbidden.Throughclandestinelyfilmedperformanceswithmembersofmanydifferentcommunities—indigenous,trans,queer,rural,Afro-Colombianandradicaloutsidersamongthem—MariaRomerorecreatesnorthernColombia’slargestculturaleventasanessayisticperformancefilm,demonstratinghowCarnivalisalifebloodtoitsmanydiverseparticipants. ThisscreeningwillbeaccompaniedwithaninpersonconversationwithCarlosMariaRomero(LaNave)andwilltakeplaceatTheMaltingsinBerwick-upon-Tweed. MariaRomero’sextensiveartisticpracticeincorporatesmanydifferentforms,stretchingacrossperformance,pedagogyandcommunity-building.CombiningtheseelementswithembeddedknowledgeandnetworksasanativeofBarranquilla,thefilmmakertransmitsafeelingtotheviewerofbeingledthroughaseriesofprivateencounterswiththefeaturedperformers,musiciansandcitizens(aperspectivewhichwouldotherwisebeclosedtous).Ineffect,thisseriesofencountersestablishesafilmicformthatmirrorsaparadeorprocession—oneofthecentralcomponentsofCarnival—throughourshortinteractionswithparticipants/performers,whoarethendisplacedbythenextsubsequentpersontostepinfrontofthecamera. ButLaNaveisnotjustaformalmirrortotheCarnivaldeBarranquilla;thefilmbeautifullycapturesthesensorialphenomenaimpartedbyitsparticipants.Itisalivewithpleasure,sensuality,spirituality,humour,spontaneity;itsimultaneouslyupholdstheweightandgravityoftraditionwhilstleavingspacefortheexpansivenessofnewperspectivestosupplantwhatcamebefore.
