
ThroughArabicpoetry,collectivehistoryandwhatartistSophiaAl-Mariacalls“anassemblageofexquisitecadavermoments”,TenderPointRuintraversesthegifts,thevulnerabilitiesandthedetritusofart-making. Howdowemakeandremakeourselves?ThebodyofTenderPointRuinunravelsthroughaseriesofauralandtextualencounters.Beginningwiththeroguetest(abehaviouralexperimentusingmirrorsandmakeupfromthe70s,whichmappedhowselfrecognitiondevelopsinyoungchildren)andendingwithaconversationwithherfrequentcollaboratordragperformanceartistSinWaiKin. Inmanyways,thefilmisacompanionpiecetoherrecentvideoworkBeastTypeSong,inwhichshebegantoexploreherprofoundlossoffaithinthewrittenform.InTenderPointRuin,Al-Mariareturnstomanyofthesamereferencesandtexts.AnessaywrittentorejectspeechlessnessbyJamaican-AmericanwriterMichelleCliffentitledCaliban’sDaughteristhistimerecitedbyAmericanartistKelseyLu.EtelAdnan,whoseepic1989poemTheArabApocalypse,sofoundationaltoBeastTypeSong,isherecastintheroleofthepoet.HergravellyvoiceaccompaniesimagesofthemoonasshetellsusoftherecurringimagesofdesolateloversinArabicpoetry,theiryearningtellingusofthe“tenderpointofaruin.”Inbetween,weseeUmmKulthum,theiconicEgyptiansinger’sonly1970performanceinParis,performingAl-Atlal.Describingheartbreak,thesongwasoriginallyapoembyIbrahimNagianditstitletranslatesas‘theruins’.
