ManypeopleprobablyknowChrisMarker’sstoryofatimetripfromadystopianfuturebacktothepresent,inwhichtheheroexperiencesatraumaticeventagain,onlythroughTerryGilliam’sextrovertedremake“12Monkeys”.Theoriginal,Marker’sexperimentalsciencefictionclassic“LaJetée”,however,wasgroundbreakingratherbecauseofitsminimalistnarrativeform:The28-minuteblackandwhitephotonovelwithasinglemovingshothasmadefilmhistory. DominiqueCabreranowtakesaverypersonalapproachtoputtingtheinfluentialworkinahistoricalcontext:Theyearofitscreation,1962,wasalsotheyearwhenAlgeriagainedindependencefromFrenchcolonialruleandhundredsofthousandsofFrenchpeoplewithrootsinAlgeria,theso-calledPieds-noirs,lefttheirhomelandtoenterexileviaOrlyairport.InFrance,anew,uncertainexistenceawaitedthem–includingCabrera’sfamily.Sixdecadeslater,hercousin,whohappenedtobepresentonthepierofParis-OrlywhenMarkertookphotosforhisfilm,isconvincedthatherecogniseshimselfinthefifthshotof“LaJetée”.Thisisthepreludetooneofthemostthrillingandatthesametimelovingtimetripsonecanimagine–andthebeginningofadetectiveandcinephileresearchwithevermoreastonishingtwists.
