Inthisearlywork,Jonastranslatesherperformancestrategiestovideo,applyingtheinherentpropertiesofthemediumtoherinvestigationsoftheselfandthebody.Jonasperformsinadirect,one-on-oneconfrontationwiththeviewer,usingtheimmediacyandintimacyofvideoasconceptualconstructs.Exploringvideoasbothamirrorandamaskingdevice,andusingherbodyasanartobject,sheundertakesanexaminationofselfandidentity,subjectivityandobjectivity.Creatingaseriesofinversions,shesplitsherimage,splitsthevideoscreen,andsplitsheridentificationwithinthevideospace,playingwiththespatialambiguityofnon-reversedimages(video)andreversedimages(mirrors).ThoughJonas’approachisformalistandreductive,herperformancerevealsanironictheatricality.Illustratingthephenomenologyofvideoasamirror,LeftSideRightSideisaclassicofearlyperformance-based,conceptualvideo.(Letterboxd)
