TheconversationrevolvesaroundtwoeventsfromJapaneseTaiwanduringWorldWarII.Oneisthememorialceremonyheldinazootocommemorateanimalsthatdiedduringmilitaryoperations.Animalssuchaselephantsandorangutansweretrainedtokneelasasymbolicpostureformourning.Theotherreferenceisthe1944massiveanimalexecutionintheTaiwanesezoo,intendedtopreventciviliancasualtiescausedbyanimalsaftertheUSmilitaryhadbombedthecities.Theunfortunateanimalswerethenturnedintotaxidermytopreservetheirmovementsandpostures.
