
Zvenigorais,intermsofnarrativeandcontent,oneofthemostremarkableavant-gardefilmsofanexuberantlyexperimentalperiod.ThefilmusesthecentralconstructofalegendregardingtreasureburiedinMountZvenigoratobuildamontageofscenespraisingUkrainianindustrialisation,attackingtheEuropeanbourgeoisie,celebratingthebeautyoftheUkrainiansteppeandre-tellingancientmyths.<br/> ThenarrativeisbuiltuponModernistlines,disregardingthetraditional,novelisticstorytellingtechniquesandinsteadusingabruptshiftsintimeandusingtheconstructivedevicesofavant-gardepoetssuchasBlok,BelyandMayakovskytocreateapictureofmodernUkrainethatpushesinseveraldirectionsatonce.<br/> Therearesomeincrediblystrikingtableauxthatrequiretheviewerstocreateastructureforthemselves(suchastheBolsheviksoldierdirectinghisownexecution)althoughtheclimaxdoesdrawtheprecedingeventstogether,combiningthedialecticalthreadsofmodernindustryandtheoldman'smythtogetherintwoexhilaratingscenes.<br/> Thecinematographyisfascinating-elementsofthestyleofEisenstein,Pudovkin,ProtazanovandKuleshovarerecognisable,yetZvenigoraseemscompletelydifferenttoanyofthem.Thejuxtapositionofrapidmontages,swiftcitytoursandslow,poeticjourneysaroundthecountrysideispowerful,andthemythicalscenes,althoughwinding,arebeautifullyrealisedwithadreamlikequalitytothem.<br/> ZvenigoraisnotDovzhenko'smasterpiece,ifonlybecausehisEarth(1930)isoneofthegreatestRussianfilmsevermade.However,itishighlyrecommended,althoughifyouarenewtoRussianfilmoftheperioditisprobablynotthebestplacetostart.
