Ontherunwayisanewairplanetype.Itistheprideofallthepeopleinvolved.AmongthemLudwigBartuschek.Thefilmtellsthestoryofthissmart,unflinchingman,leadingintothepastwithseveralflashbacks.TheendoftheWeimarRepublic:directorgeneralDehringeroffersLudwigvocationaltrainingasanaircraftdesignerattheSperberFactory.Thejobwouldofferhimprotectionfromthefascists.Inreturn,DehringerwantsBartuschektogiveuphispoliticalattitudeasacommunist.ButBartuschekdecidestogointohidingandbidsfarewelltohiswifeandchild.Hedoesnotknowyetthattheywillnotseeeachotherforoveradecade.Hiswifeisarrested,hissonHennefindsshelterinthefamilyofacolleague.In1944LudwigappearsinthesurroundingsoftheSperberFactory,disguisedasaFrenchforeignworker.Histaskistoorganizelocalresistance.ButhisplanisrevealedandLudwigistakentoaconcentrationcamp.In1945fatherandsoncomefacetofaceagain:oneisstillwearingthestripedsmockoftheconcentrationcamp,theotheroneisadornedwiththeswastikaarmbandofanationalsocialistantiaircrafthelper.Bothdecidetorebuildthefactory.With“PeoplewithWings”KonradWolfcontinuesthestoryoftheradiooperatorLudwigBratuschekfromthefilm“TheSailor’sSong”(director:KurtMaetzig).Butwhatstartedwithsomuchenthusiasminthefilmcomestoalapidaryendinrealityoneyearlater:TheComecondecidedtoabandontheaircraftindustryoftheGRD.Soonafterwards,thefilmwaswithdrawn.
