
NotedAustrianactorKlaus-MariaBrandauersteppedintothedirector'schairforthisdramaabouttheriseoffascisminEurope,basedonastorybyThomasMann.Inthe1920s,BernhardFuhrmann(JulianSands),aGermanauthorandoutspokenleftist,takeshisfamilytoTorrediVenere,aresortcommunityinItaly,wheretheyarenotwelcomedwarmlybyalloftheresidents,especiallyafteranincidentinwhichFuhrmann'sdaughteriscaughtswimmingnudebytheseashore.WhileseveraloftheguestsatthehotelwheretheFuhrmannsarestayingvoicetheiroppositiontothefamily'spresence,theconciergedefendstheirrighttostaythere--untilsheiskilledandreplacedbyamemberofthelocalfascistbrigade.Asthevillageisenvelopedinchaos,amagiciannamedCipola(Brandauer)appears,whohasaprofoundeffectonthelivesofthosearoundhim.MarioundderZaubererwasshownincompetitionatthe1994MoscowFilmFestival.
