AstoryofafamilythatafterWWIImovedtothesouthofSlovakiaandacquiredaprosperousbutcherbusinessleftbehindbyaHungarianemigrant.Fromthepreviousowner,thefamilyalsoinheritedaself-assured,greedyassistantwhodoesnotliketoobserveanyfirmmoralprinciples.Heassiststhefamilyingainingwealthbutinthelongrun,hecausesthefamily'smoraldissolution.Inhismostsuccessfulfeaturefilm,directorZoroZahoncombinedacomplexdramawithexcellentactingperformances,especiallythatofHungarianactorGaborKonczintheleadrole.<br/> Reican(EloRomancik)thelocalbutcherisnoblytryingtomakealivingforhimselfandhisfamilyafterWorldWarIIinasmalltowninsouthernSlovakia.HismachoassistantVolent(GaborKonz)hashismindsetonadvancingintheworldandhestartstodosobyfirstseducingthebutcher'swife(IldikoPecsi)andeventually,alsoherdaughter(MartaSladeckova).Thebutcherhimselfisnotmotivatedbyconsumerism,andheresistsallthematerialtemptationsthataresnatchedupbythelocalup-and-comingelite.Unfortunately,hiswifedoesnotsharehismorespartan,non-materialisticviewoflifeandsheandtheassistantVolenthatchsomeschemestomakealotofmoneyfast--andtheysucceed.Bynow,thebutcherislessandlesshappywithhislifeathomeandthesenewrichesleavehimcold--soonerorlater,hewillhavetodecideonacourseofactionthatwillsetthingsrightforhimsincehecannotseemtochangeovertoamoreavariciouslifestyle.
