Synopsis<br/> August1945.ChoeHan-jung(JeonChang-keun)isaKoreanfreedomfighterwhoisservingtimeinprisonafterbeingbetrayedbyJapanesecollaboratorNam-bu(DogEun-gi).HesucceedsinescapingfromprisonandtakesrefugeinthehomeofHye-ja(HwangYui-hee),whoisanurseatauniversityhospital.Han-jung'sundergroundorganizationproceedswithitsplanforanarmeduprising,butPark(KimSeung-ho)getscapturedbytheJapanesemilitarypoliceonhiswaybackfromacquiringdynamite.Han-jungrescuesParkandhidesoutintheapartmentofNam-bu'sgirlfriendMi-hyang(YooKye-seon).WhilegivingHan-jungshelter,Mi-hyangfallsinlovewithhimandgoestothebasementhousingHan-jung'sundergroundorganizationinordertopurveyinformationandfunds.However,sheisfollowedtherebyNam-buandthemilitarypolice,whoshootandkillher.Han-jungisalsowoundedandmovedtotheuniversityhospital.Hye-ja,whohassecretlybeeninlovewithHan-jung,helpshimtoescapefromthehospitalwhilethemilitarypolicemanonguardhasdozedoff.<br/> Notes<br/> "Afull-fledgeddramaticfilmmadewiththeparticipationofrepresentativefiguresintheKoreanfilmindustryimmediatelyaftertheliberationofAugust15,1945,VivaFreedom!isasignificantfilminthehistoryofKoreancinemainthatittakestheanti-JapanesestruggleandtherestorationofKorea'sindependenceasitsmainsubjects."(ChungJong-wha)<br/> VivaFreedom!isoneoftheearliestdramaticfilmstobemadeafterKorearegaineditsindependencein1945.TwofigureswhorepresentedtheKoreanfilmindustryduringtheJapanesecolonialperiod,JeonChang-keunandChoiIn-kyu,wroteanddirectedthefilm,respectively.Inaddition,thefilmenjoyedtheparticipationofHanHyeong-mo,whohadreturnedafterstudyingcinematographyinJapan;KimSeong-chun,Korea'sfirst-generationlightingdirector;andYangJu-nam,thefirsteditorinthehistoryofKoreanfilm.Atthetimeofitsrelease,italsoenjoyedtremendouscommercialsuccessthankstotheresponseofanaudiencestillelatedbythenation'srecentliberation.VivaFreedom!affordsglimpsesintoboththethematicconsciousnessofthetimeandtheearlyinterestofKoreancinemainthequestionofgenre.VivaFreedom!dealswiththethemesofresistanceagainstJapaneseruleandthefightforindependenceusingthegenericconventionsofthemelodramaandtheactionmovie.Thatis,iftherelationshipbetweenfreedomfigherHan-jungandthetwowomenwholovehimproceedsaccordingtotheplotconventionsofthemelodrama,thechaseandgunfightscenesinvolvingtheJapanesemilitarypolice,forwhichthetechniqueofcrosscuttingwasattempted,demonstratethevisualcharacteristicsoftheactionmovie.WhileVivaFreedom!isimportantforitshistoricalvalueasafilmaboutnationalindependence,itisalsointerestingasanearlyexampleoftheaction-melodramainKoreanfilmhistory.
