
Acollectionsofscenesbasedondocuments,letters,picturesandpoemsthatdepictaman'seroticnature.<br/> OneofmodernDanishcinema’spioneers,JorgenLethhasbeenmakingfilmssincethelate1950s.Thebreadthofhisworkhasbeenstaggering,rangingfromportraitfilms(usuallyfocusingonartistslikedancerPeterMartensorjazzgreatBudPowell)toimpressionistic,poeticnotebooksonChina,HaitiandtheUSAtosuspensefulaccountsofsportingevents(includingtheTourdeFrance).Buthe’sbestknownforabsurdistglimpsesofcontemporarylifeinDenmark,mostnotablyThePerfectHuman,whichservedasthesparkforhiscollaborationwithLarsvonTrier,thewidelycelebratedTheFiveObstructions.(Needlesstosay,hehashadanenormousinfluenceonthecurrentcropofDanishfilmmakers.)<br/> Stillnothinghe’sdoneinthepasttoquiteprepareanyonefortheidiosyncraticanduniquepleasuresofTheEroticHuman,insomewayshismostradicalandpersonalwork,apowerfulandsometimesshockinglyhonestessayabouteros,agingandloss.Thepremiseisdeceptivelysimple.Lethtravelstoseveralcountries(thelocationsincludeHaiti,thePhilippines,Senegal,Brazil,Argentina,Panama)tocastoneparticularscene:awoman,usuallynaked,issittinginahotelroom,lamentingthelossofherloverwhohasreturnedtoEurope.But,witheachnewreenactmentofthescene,onebeginstoquestionsitsveracity.It’saforlornfantasy–aman’sneedtore-experienceascenehecouldonlyeverhaveimagined,atbest.(ThereareechoesofAlainResnais’searly1960sclassics,HiroshimamonamourandLastYearatMarienbad.)<br/> ThesescenesaresetagainstfootageofLethaloneinhotelrooms,ruminatingonthepitfallsandnatureofhisproject;hilariousdiscussionsofthecastingsessionswithhiscolleagues(herefusestoturnanyonedown);highlyaestheticizednudestudiesoffemalebodies;and,inonememorablemoment,aboattripuptheAmazon.<br/> ThejuxtapositionofagewithyouthandbeautycreatesanoverlyfecundatmospherewherefertilityconnotesdecayalaKeats’“ToAutumn”.(Thefilm’spalpablesenseofresignationisheightenedandmademorepainfulbyLeth’sowncomplicatedoutsiderstatusinmostoftheareashevisits,asituationthefilmisawareofbutneverdirectlyaddresses.)<br/> Whatemergesisanelegyforlostpossibilitiesandapaeantosensualityandthefemaleform–andpossiblythemostupfrontandsearinglookatsexualityyouwillseeinalongwhile.–TIFF.net
