In1961,filmmakerRobertGardnerorganizedtheHarvardPeabodyExpeditiontoNetherlandsNewGuinea(todayWestPapua).FundedbytheDutchcolonialgovernmentandprivatedonations,andconsistingofseveralwealthyAmericanswielding16mmfilmcameras,stillphotographiccameras,reel-to-reeltaperecorders,andamicrophone,theexpeditionsettledforfivemonthsintheBaliemValley,amongtheHubulapeople.ItresultedinGardner’sinfluentialfilmDeadBirds,twophotobooks,PeterMatthiessen’sbook“UndertheMountainWall,”andtwoethnographicmonographs.MichaelRockefeller,oftheStandardOilRockefellers,wastaskedwithtakingpicturesandrecordingsoundinandaroundtheHubulaworld.<br/> ExpeditionContentisanaugmentedsoundworkcomposedfrom37hoursoftape,whichdocumentthestrangeencounterbetweentheexpeditionandtheHubulapeople.Thepiecereflectsonintertwinedandcomplexhistoricalmomentsinthedevelopmentofapproachestomultimodalanthropology,inthelivesoftheHubulaandofMichael,andintheongoinghistoryofcolonialisminWestPapua.
