
TheBeatHotel,anewfilmbyAlanGovenar,goesdeepintothelegacyoftheAmericanBeatsinParisduringtheheadyyearsbetween1957and1963,whenAllenGinsberg,PeterOrlovskyandGregoryCorsofledtheobscenitytrialsintheUnitedStatessurroundingthepublicationofGinsberg’spoemHowl.Theytookrefugeinacheapno-namehoteltheyhadheardaboutat9,RueGitleCoeurandweresoonjoinedbyWilliamBurroughs,IanSomerville,BrionGysin,andothersfromEnglandandelsewhereinEurope,seekingoutthe“freedom”thattheLatinQuarterofParismightprovide.<br/> TheBeatHotel,asitcametobecalled,wasasanctuaryofcreativity,butwasalso,asBritishphotographerHaroldChapmanrecalls,“anentirecommunityofcompleteoddballs,bizarre,strangepeople,poets,writers,artists,musicians,pimps,prostitutes,policemen,andeverybodyyoucouldimagine.”Andinthisenvironment,BurroughsfinishedhiscontroversialbookNakedLunch;IanSomervilleandBrionGysininventedtheDreamMachine;Corsowrotesomeofhisgreatestpoems;andHaroldNorse,inhisowncut-upexperiments,wrotethenovella,aptlycalledTheBeatHotel.<br/> ThefilmtracksdownHaroldChapmaninthesmallseasidetownofDealinKentEngland.Chapman’sphotographsareiconicofatimeandplacewhenGinsberg,Orlovsky,Corso,Burroughs,Gysin,SomervilleandNorsewerejustbeginningtoestablishthemselvesontheinternationalscene.Chapmanlivedintheatticofthehotel,andaccordingtoGinsberg“didn’tsayawordfortwoyears”becausehewantedtobe“invisible”andtodocumentthesceneasitactuallyhappened.<br/> Inthefilm,Chapman’sphotographsandstylizeddramaticrecreationsofhisstoriesmeldwiththerecollectionsofElliotRudie,aScottishartist,whosedrawingsofhistimeinthehotelofferapoignantandsometimeshumorouscounterpoint.ThememoriesofChapmanandRudieinterweavewiththeinsightsofFrenchartistJean-JacquesLebel,authorBarryMiles,DanishfilmmakerLarsMovin,andthefirsthandaccountsofOliverHarris,ReginaWeinrich,PatrickAmie,EddieWoods,and95yearoldGeorgeWhitman,amongothers,toevokeaportraitofGinsberg,Burroughs,CorsoandtheodditiesoftheBeatHotelthatisatonceunexpectedandrevealing.<br/> TheBeatHoteliscompleted,andisdistributedbyFirstRunFeatures.TheworldpremierewaspresentedbytheDanishFilmInstitute<br/> inCopenhagenonDecember8,2011.
