NoonelessthantheHungarianBélaBartókoncedeclared:"Competitionsareforhorses,notartists!"UsingtheexampleoftheChopinPianoCompetitioninWarsaw,thedocumentaryfilm"WhyCompetitions"looksintothequestionwhetherthecompetitivespiritthatdominatesmusiccompetitionsisconformablewithobjectiveandethicalprecepts,whethertheprizewinnersactuallybenefitfromtheirsuccessandwhathappenstothosewhoareoftenbeingstigmatizedas"losers".ThisdocumentaryfilmaboutthemostimportantpianocompetitionintheworldwasproducedontheoccasionofFredericChopins200thbirthdayanddoeswithoutanarrator.Insteaditletstheparticipantsandjurymembershavetheirsay,someofwhohavelearnttokeeptheirdistancetotheirexperiences,yetmostofthemareunabletoforgetandacceptthefacttheyhadtosufferinjusticeevenafter60years.<br/> ThefilmfocusesonthescandalfollowingtheeliminationoftheCroatianpianistIvoPogorelichwhodidnotpasstothefinalroundatthecompetitionin1980,whichcausedtheworld-famousArgentinianpianistMarthaArgerichtoleavethejuryinprotest,thankstowhichPogorelichbecameastarovernight.1980alsomarkedaturningpointinPolishhistory:Afewmonthsbeforethecompetitionbeganthetradeunion"Solidarnosc"wasestablished,enablingtheyoungcompetitorstowitnessanimportanthistoricevent.FormanyofthoseyoungpianiststhiswastheirfirstencounterwiththeCommunistrealityofpost-warPoland,whichleadsinthefilmtothequestion,towhatextentacompetitioncanenrichthelifesofitsparticipantsbeyondmerelyprovidingavehicleforaninternationalcareer.EventheisolatedPolishaudiencebenefitedfromthecompetition,forthiswasoneoftheveryfewopportunitiestoenterintocontactwiththepoliticaloutsideworld.OfcoursetheCommunistRegimestriedtomakethecompetitionintoabattlebetweentheWestandtheEast,whichmadeitextremelydifficultforSovietparticipantswhodidnotfulfilltheirregime`sexpecactionstolaunchaninternationalcareer.<br/> Thefilmisdividedinseveralchapterswitheachofthemdealingwithanothercompetitionyear.In1980itwasPogorelichwhotookcenterstage,in1975thethreeSovietcompetitorswhoinsteadofwinningthecompetitiononlytook2nd,3rd,and4thprizewere"penalized"bytheSovietRegimeandthuspreventedfrommakingacareerafterthecompetition.Thelastchapterdealswiththegeneralquestionwhethermusiccompetitionscanbejustanduseful.Neverbeforehassuchawiderangeofworld-famousmusiciansandeminentpedagoguesspokenonthissubjectsocandidly.Withsomeuglytruthsaboutcorruptionandbriberybeingrevealedbytheserespectablepersons,thequestionremains:Whydothesepeopleoftenchosetoremainanintegralpartoftheinternationalcompetitioncircuit?
