
StephenDwoskin’sfinalfilmisameditationonthesubjectiveexperienceandculturalconceptsofageing.Thefilmisanodetothetexture,thebeauty,thesingularityofagingfacesandsilhouettes,ahypnoticpoemintheDwoskinmeaningofthetermwhichislongobservationsofverytinydetails.Agesture,apause,alook,amoment.ThroughouthisfilmsintimacyhasalwaysplayedaleadingroleandthisisalsotrueforAgeis...,allthefacesbeingclosefriends,orclosefriendsrelativesandsometimesevenStephenhimself.<br/> ThreeorfouryearsagoIreadforthefirsttimeSimonedeBeauvoir’sLaVieillessewhichwaswrittenin1970.Therewasonepointinparticularthatstruckme:theauthor’spersistenceinwritingit.Everybodytriedtodissuadeher,arguing“Oldagedoesn’tinterestanyone.”Butlikeallhumansituations,oldagehasanexistentialdimension:itchangesaperson’srelationtotime,andthustotheworldandthatperson’shistory.Oldageisnotsomethingstatic,it’sthecompletionandcontinuationofatransformation.It’sametamorphosisandit’shorrifyingassuch.DeBeauvoirproposestostopcheatingbyignoringthisaspectofourlives:“Wedon’tknowwhoweare,ifwedon’tknowwhowewillbe.Thisoldman,thisoldwoman,weshouldrecognizeourselvesinthem.Wehavetoifwewantacceptourhumanconditioninitstotality.”<br/> Forme,thecommonperceptionofoldageisnotmoresatisfyingthanthatofpainbeforeIwentexploringitinPainis...Thecondescensiontowardsolderpeopledoesn’tinterestmeatall,ofcourse,justlikethattowardshandicappedpeople.Inordertoagewellyouhavetofeelthatyouhavesomesortofvalue,aplaceinsociety.Thatwhichmakesyoufeeloldisrejection,oblivion,whicharecharacteristicofWesternsocieties.Thesamesocietywhichtriestomakeyouliveaslongaspossibledoeseverythinginordertostophelpingyouafteracertainage.Therewasatimewhenolderpeoplehadacertainvalue,theywererespectedfortheirwisdomandknowledge.Ataveryearlystageofpreparationforthisproject,IthoughtaboutAmericanIndians.Thosefacesthatformebecomeparchments,thosewrinklesthattellsomanystories.Theirbeautyaloneundoestheconceptofage.Whatstrikesmewhenseeingthesepeopleisthevalue,theinvaluablewhichthoseeyeshaveseen,thosehandshavefelt,muchmorethancertainyoungerfaceswhichlookrather“photoshopped.”Innocencewasneververyinterestingforme.Iwasalwaysmoreinterestedinfullness,complexity,theambiguityofbeing.Thatwhichismorethanthesumofadjectivesthatareusedtoqualifyit.<br/> Ageisaquestion,afear,somethingthatmaycalmyoutoo,butfirstofallit’sawayoflooking.Otherpeoplelookingatyouandyoulookingatotherpeople.It’swordsthatqualifyyou,officiallettersthatclassifyyou.Agegetsmeasuredbyanellipse,inthephotosofabygoneera,therediscoveryofoldfilms,theexistenceofanarchive.ThosearetheplacesthatIwishtoexplore,likethememoryofapath.Unfortunately,agealsomeansloss.Thelossofthings,people,friends.Youbecomeverylonely.That’smaybeoneofthereasonswhyIwanttoaskmyfriendstoshootsomeimages.—S.D.
