In2013theSupremeCourtoftheDominicanRepublic(DR)upheldlegislationthatstrippedcitizenshipfromindividualsofHaitianheritageborninthatcountry.Hispaniolaisafeaturedocumentarythatwilltakeaudiencesonacinematicjourneythroughtheday-to-daylivesofpeopledirectlyimpactedbythesenewlaws.ThereisElenaLorac,ayoungDominicanofHaitiandescentwhosefallintostatelessnesshasrenderedherinvisible,forcedtofunctionbelowtheradarandavoidconfrontationwhenattackedbecauseofherancestry;AmeliaDeschampsisaDominicanjournalistwhohasspokenoutagainsttheselawsandunexpectedlyfindsherselfthetargetofdeaththreatsfromanti-Haitianright-wingnationalists;andcontrastingthisviewisRamónNarpier,aUniversityprofessorwhowishespeoplewouldbetterunderstandthekindofeconomicandsocialpressurehiscountryfaceswiththeconstantstreamofpovertystrickenHaitiansenteringtheDominicanRepublic.Interweavingtheirpresentdaystorieswithdramaticpersonalaccountsofthe1937ParsleyMassacre(over30,000HaitianskilledatthehandsofDominicansoldiers),thefilmwillbeautifullyjuxtaposehowpastandpresentconvergeasitexploresthemesofgenocideandotherness.Hispaniolahopestoprovideaudienceswithaspellbindingvisualnarrativethatreflectsonthelargerquestionsofhowimposedborders,citizenshipandracialidentitydefineusandmaysealourfate.
