James Timothy McCarver (born October 16, 1941) is an American former professional baseball player and television sports commentator. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from 1959 to 1980, most prominently as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals where, he was a two-time All-Star player and a member of two World Series winning teams. Later in his career while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, McCarver became known as the regular catcher for Hall of Fame pitcher, Steve Carlton. One of the few major league players to have appeared in four different decades, he finished second in voting for the 1967 National League (NL) Most Valuable Player Award.
