Young people are playing softball under a starry sky. They were Taihei Yuasa (Kyu Sakamoto), his schoolmates Komori (Junzaburo Ban), Yamada (Tonpei Sadata), Kono (Chinpei Hayashiya), Terayama (Toyozo Yamamoto), and his teacher Miwa (Bunta Sugawara). They were part-time high school students who worked during the day and studied at night. One day, the cheerful and popular Taihei received a letter from a female student at a full-time high school. Yumiko Miyaji (Hiromi Sakaki), with her romantic name and beautiful letters, made him and his friends imagine her as a young lady living in a luxurious mansion. At that time, a joint speech contest with the full-time students was held, and in place of Terayama, who was unable to participate due to work commitments, Komori, a student in his 40s, took part and won the grand prize. That day, Taihei was introduced to Yumiko for the first time. She was as bright and beautiful as I imagined. Taihei's friend at the factory is a man named Tsutomu Fujimoto (Katsuo Nakamura). Fujimoto, who has many siblings, was constantly worried about the hardships of living. Taihei also wondered what to do with Tsutomu, but one day, Taihei was invited to Yumiko's house and was surprised to see Tsutomu there. Yumiko was Tsutomu's companion. However, what surprised Taihei more than that was that Yumiko's family lived a very ordinary life in a tenement house in the downtown area, with her father as the conductor of a streetcar.
