Whenthisfilm’sdirectorwasstillaboy,hestoodinfrontof“FlotelEuropa“andwashugelyexcitedabouttheprospectofthisgiganticshipmooredintheportofCopenhagenbecominganewhomeforhim,hismotherandhisolderbrother.Togetherwithabout1000otherrefugeesfromtheformerYugoslavia,theystartedlifeanewontheship.Likemanyfamiliesdidintheearly90s,theyusedtosendvideomessagesonVHStothefather,whohadstayedbackhome:footageofthecommunalkitchen,thewindowlesscabin,theTVroom,excursionsmadewithcoolnewfriends,adanceperformancebytheunattainableMelisa.DirectorVladimirTomiccouldhavejustusedthismaterialtoillustratealostchildhoodandthesqualorofrefugeelife,butbyeditingittogetheranddrawingonhismemoriesofthattime,hesucceedsincreatingsomethingnew,somethingofhisown,somethingspecial.TheshiftinperspectivefrominternaltoexternalturnsFlotelEuropainanautobiographicalfilmaboutadifficultlot,whichisallthemoretouchingbecauseitliberatestherefugeefromtheroleofthevictim–andtransformsashyyoungmanintoalovablefilmstar.berlinale2015
