姆里纳尔·森于1943年通过印度人民戏剧协会进入艺术世界。1956年，他拍摄了第一部电影《黎明》。深受左翼思想影响，他的电影大多涉及社会政治主题以及孟加拉城市中产阶级生活的复杂性。他的第二部电影《蓝天之下》于1958年被政府禁映两个月。尽管主要从事孟加拉语电影创作，森也拍摄过奥里亚语、泰卢固语和印地语电影。他曾四次获得印度国家电影奖最佳影片奖，其作品在国际各大电影节展映并屡获殊荣。森还曾担任戛纳国际电影节评审团成员。
