It has been a few years since we last saw Anna and Henrik. Their marriage is no longer happy. The sympathy of thirty-six-year-old Anna feels for the young student Tomas soon turns into love. Her strong personality governs their relationship, and she experiences a love happiness she never thought possible. At the same time, she is severely tormented by her conscience. She entrusts herself to her confirmation priest Jacob (Max von Sydow). Is Anna able to follow the advice he gives her? We get to follow her struggle during five individual conversations; with Jacob, her mother, her lover Tomas, her friend Märta and then Henrik - the man she let down but did not want to hurt.
