有人拿它与霸王别姬比，但这两部电影风格完全不同。要是让陈凯歌拍戏梦人生，这电影会被剪掉一半多。片中大量的固定机位拍摄、光影设计与大量老者讲述奠定了电影“空”“静”“慢”的特点，以至于对于生死也没有表现出波澜。同样的一段历史，陈凯歌像是愤青，要展现冲突，展现压迫，展现不公；侯孝贤像是长者在那里娓娓道来，只是去展现历史，只是去展现人生。
